[SDBUG] Considering switch Fedora Core 4 to OpenBSD

If you are looking for User Friendly Warm Fuzzies, you wont get it with
OpenBSD. It's a technical piece of work. You WILL get a nice chunk of
security though, and while I am not a fan of hugging -anyones- 'private
parts' (a worksafe phrase), I am a supporter (financial and otherwise)
of what the OpenBSD guys are doing... errm, just not in that fashion.
Disclaimer: someday I hope to be involved in their development process.

So get FreeBSD first and see how usable and smooth it is, and how many
cool packages you can install. Then later on down the road if you give
shell accounts out to friends and loved ones and you begin to feel itchy
because they may use Tetris or some other non-audited package to root
your box, get OpenBSD.

Joseph makes another great point about automation. Learn how it works
first, then when your carpal tunnel acts up or you want to get up from
the console and take out the trash or something viscerally productive,
then run the automation stuff, but it sounds like you know all about the
manual process already. Its not much different between them, and Joseph
clarifies a couple of the more obvious pkg_add differences.

But hey, run both and do yourself a great service :) use OBSD as a
firewall, and FBSD as your desktop behind it! So if you want a bunch of
packages and friendliness within that realm, use FBSD -- and if you want
protection, use OBSD in front of it, and don't worry about the box for a
while.

Off topic, and you guys can reply off list to me if you want, but how
many folks typically attend the meetings?

p.s.
Yes I use outlook at work. Some of us don't have a choice, and yes I am
working on getting approval for something else. So there.

Well, the two projects have different overall goals. FreeBSD aims for
high
performance and usability, OpenBSD aims for high security out of the
box.
Don't read too much into those statements, as they really don't mean all

that much. Instead you should read up on specific project goals at
their
respective websites.

OpenBSD borrows the ports tree from FreeBSD, and with it comes a lot of
the
same tools (such as pkg_add). Though the functionality is somewhat
different.. for instance, you can't just type -f to force add a package
in
OpenBSD. You need to specify which failsafes should be overlooked.
Just as
an aside, you really shouldn't be forcing the install of packages if you

aren't absolutely sure what you're doing. That's a really quick way to
end
up in hot water if you don't know your system (and the packages) inside
and
out. I can't stress how important it is that you be careful when
overriding
failsafes.

Upgrading the kernel is also a lot like FreeBSD. You can cvsup and
build it
or you can install pre-compiled packages, and yeah there are tools to
automate the process.. though again, I really wouldn't recommend it.
Besides, doing things the hard way is how you learn them.

In the end they'll look a little different and feel the same, you'll be
able
to navigate the differences with manpages. So this is where I give you
the
obligatory RTFM and send you off into the wild blue yonder.

PS: Don't hug Theo's nuts.
